Need a burst of creative energy to power through a set of difficult tasks, the cough is here to help. A quick hit to facilitate conversation in a new social setting, Strawberry’s got your back. And all while exuding a delicious sweet and crisp flavor evocative of fresh strawberries just off the vine.
From New York to L.A.
First bred in 2000 by former High Times editor Kyle Kushman, Strawberry Cough developed a buzzing reputation in the New York cannabis seen. When Kushman relocated to California, he not only brought the strain along and popularized it in the California market, but seeded cuttings too many growers along the way, further cementing the strains popularity. Kushmann’s Original formulation of the strain was only able to be reproduced through clones, and so his Johnny Appleseed-esque cross country distribution was necessary for the strain to take root in many locations. In more recent years a new genetic formulation of the strain has been bred which is able to produce seeds. This incarnation of the strain is a mix of Afghani and Blackberry. It has an average THC content of 19%, with 0.8% CBD levels and it is a sativa dominant strain. It also is composed of 10% Ruderalis genetics which insure that it is auto-flowering.
Strawberry Yields Forever
Like so many cannabis strains, given the right climate, sun exposure, and fertilizers, this plant will thrive in the outdoors. But unlike many sativa dominant strains, this is also a plant whose phenotype makes it ideal for indoor cultivation as well. Strawberry Cough exhibits a short and dense growth pattern with bud sites that are more characteristic of the density of a pure indica. No training and topping the plant just to keep it away from your ceiling. No worries about light penetration due to spaced out bud sites. In ideal conditions, this plant can produce 14 ounces of dried bud per square meter.
Strawberry Cough is a relatively easy strain to grow. It prefers constant temperatures around 21 degrees C or 70 degrees F.
Strawberry is a hearty plant which is vigorous and resistant to diseases including spider-mites. It produces sturdy branches which are not prone to breaking under the weight of its dense buds. It is just as likely to survive a windstorm as an accidentally tipped pot.
While the growing characteristics and history of Strawberry Cough are interesting, these mean nothing if not backed up by a superb high and smokability. And this is where Strawberry Cough really makes its mark. Having won the best flower category at the cannabis cup in 2013, this strain combines a vibrant and colorful flower, a sweet and invigorating flavor, and a cerebral high.
When packing your bowl or rolling a joint, you will be greeted with a sweet strawberry scent with hints of the earthy fields in which strawberries grow. Like it’s high, which we will come too in a moment, these flavor notes are bursting with energy and open the pallet for a sweet and spicy smoke. Once combustion takes hold, these initial scents give way to the hints of earth and black pepper that are produced in the smoke. And what a smoke, Strawberry Cough produces a dense THC laden smoke which saturates the environment. And it is this essential collaboration and contradiction between flavor and feel that gives rise to the name. The sweet strawberry flavor allows one to draw great lungfuls of the smoke into your body, providing maximum levels of THC ingestion, yet that thick dense smoke will not be denied its due, producing a great ripping cough on the exhalation. In with the THC and out with any particulate that might have otherwise stuck around. And after that first puff, the euphoric focus that is created will allow for all of the subsequent hits to be deliberate and controlled.
Strawberry Cough has a high which can adapt itself for many types of situations. As suggested at the beginning of the piece, focused creativity and anxiety suppression are two of its main benefits, but like many other sativa, strains, the psychotropic nature of the THC driven experience means that you are able to direct the effects of your trip to a much greater degree then a more body-centric strain. Coast on the euphoric energy, focus in on a creative project, or just allow the Cough to wash away any anxiety you might feel. Strawberry Cough can be many things for many moods and is sure to become one of your go-to strains.
